UUSC has its foundation in World War II helping refugees escape Nazi persecution in Europe. We continue in that spirit today by adapting our response to the rapidly changing landscape of human rights. UUSC also recognizes the importance in building for the future to achieve a world free from injustice. A planned gift helps us secure that future. Our work today in immigration justice with Honduran migrants is a step towards this vision for the future.
Shortly after the caravan of Honduran migrants began its harrowing journey toward the United States border, UUSC released a timely report and video about human rights abuses in Honduras. As outlined in the report, the realities Hondurans face at home – political corruption; military violence; and high rates of homicide, femicide, and impunity – leave many no choice but to flee. Indeed, many in the caravan have now begun calling their group an "exodus" to further emphasize that they are escaping and not simply choosing to leave their homes.
Collaborating with grassroots allies in Mexico and the United States, UUSC has already allocated special emergency funding to support the exodus by supplying items for basic needs such as shoes, backpacks and clothing. Additional grants provide funding for legal aid and desperately needed humanitarian services for detainees at detention centers.
UUSC is also helping coordinate ministers to accompany the caravan in Mexico, and organize volunteers to support migrants through international monitoring, visibility, press conferences and public court accompaniments.
Your planned gift can help us in this struggle to build a foundation for the future of human rights and social justice. For more information on how, please contact Brendan Donnelly at 617-301-4349 or by email at bdonnelly@uusc.org.
